Despite her being the daughter of the traitor of Oda Nobunaga , that was still considered a dick move for Mitsunari and took away a lot of his popularity amongst the people, and even worse for him, Gracia arranged her own murder she's Christian, she could not commit Seppuku anymore since it went against her new faith. Hosokawa clan leader and Gracia's husband, Tadaoki, was outraged at this, he formerly had plans to join Mitsunari, but after this, he signed up for Tokugawa instead.
The other big factor was the battle of Fushimi Castle. Mitsunari's forces, en route to Sekigahara, was stalled by a veteran Tokugawa general, Torii Mototada, who initiated a mighty last stand battle. Mitsunari was delayed for about 10 days, but he was victorious anyway. However, by the time he arrived to Sekigahara, Tokugawa has already amassed a majority of their forces, which led to the eventual betrayal despite the early upper hand.
Had Mototada not delayed Mitsunari in those days, he might have held the upper hand or be victorious despite the betrayal since the Tokugawa would be severely undermanned. The second cup was served in the same chawan , but a bit hotter than the last and only about half as much.
Relaxed, Hideyoshi took his time over this cup. Finally a third was brought forth, a smaller serving in a smaller bowl, but much hotter than the previous two cups. Hideyoshi , now totally composed, could enjoy this one. Impressed, he appointed the boy to his staff. Mitsunari would come to serve the Toyotomi loyally, and would be rewarded as such. In , at the age of 25, Mitsunari was appointed Jibu-shosuke, one of two principal commissioners below the administrator for genealogies, marriages, funeral rites, imperial tombs, theaters, and music.
Mitsunari was also responsible for the reception of foreigners, most notably the Spanish and Portuguese who came in growing numbers, bringing trade and proselytizing. He had been allocated a stipend of , koku and the castle of Sawayama in Omi.
Although an able administrator, his elevated position as one of five Bugyo c ommissioners was not awarded on his martial merit, nor on his having performed heroic deeds or services, but was instead due to his ability in the tea ceremony. This fact, and his brash, aloof attitude caused personal problems between himself and the other retainers.
This council was headed by Tokugawa Ieyasu , as appointed by Hideyoshi himself. Mitsunari had three sons Shigeie , Shigenari and Sakichi and three daughters only the younger girl's name is known, Tatsuhime with his wife. After his father's death, Shigenari changed his family name to Sugiyama to keep living.

Though Ieyasu is captured, Yoshitsugu is killed in the conflict, and an enraged Mitsunari executes Ieyasu and destroys the Tokugawa clan thereafter. The sheer violence and brutality shown to Tokugawa makes Mitsunari dangerously hated by the people as a result. Not caring for his public image, he continues to quietly mourn his lost friend.
Alternatively, if Yoshitsugu is rescued by Sakon's unit, Mitsunari pardons both Ieyasu and his allies, reflecting that they both wish for a land of peace in the end.
As the decision mirrors the late Hideyoshi, Ieyasu acknowledges Mitsunari's strength and leadership and submits to him peacefully. The two then swear to work together to maintain their late lord's legacy. In Samurai Warriors: Spirit of Sanada , Mitsunari reprises some of his role under the Toyotomi, serving loyally as he does in previous titles at Yamazaki, Komaki-Nagakute and Shikoku , with his hatred for Ieyasu and camaraderie with Masanori and Kiyomasa, remaining unaltered.
Mitsunari sees the elder out, promising to take care of Yukimura, but warning Masayuki to not have any second thoughts about serving Hideyoshi. Although he blames himself for failing to read the enemy properly, Masayuki offers some recognition, noting how Mitsunari's heart was still in the right place as he wanted to avoid needless deaths instead even if he did not execute the strategy properly.
After his lord and then Toshiie 's death, Mitsunari has a severe fallout with Kiyomasa and Masanori and ends up taking refuge within Ieyasu's residence to escape an assassination attempt by his supporters. He is eventually captured by Ieyasu and subsequently executed. As the main progenitor of the rift, blame is placed solely on him, and the Toyotomi family is left out of punishment.
When Nobunaga launches an uncharacteristic attack on Cao Pi's division at Tianshui , Mitsunari is ordered by Da Ji to join Cao Pi's army in order to keep further watch over the prince. He seems to be following her orders until he lies for the prince regarding Sun Ce 's escape, saying that an impostor sent by Zhou Yu likely let the Wu forces go. After helping win over Cao Cao 's former retainers at Yiling , Mitsunari and Cao Pi both defect at Odawara and capture Da Ji, forcing her to accompany them in their desertion.
His concerns ring true at Yamazaki , when she does defect and aids Dong Zhuo's task unit in attacking the main camp. He and Cao Pi are rescued by the timely arrival of Cao Cao and they claim victory. While many officers celebrate both their victory and Cao Cao's return, Cao Pi quietly leaves the banquet, telling Mitsunari that he still has yet to reach his goals.
Mitsunari, and other officers arrive, choosing to serve Cao Pi over his father. In the stories of the other kingdoms, Mitsunari only appears early on in the story as a supporter of Orochi, but disappears as the story progresses.
He sees through Kiyomori 's trickery and orders Katsuie to kill the sorcerers. Together with his comrade he raised an army to hunt down Da Ji. After the battle ends in their victory, Mitsunari joins his former adversaries as a signal of Cao Pi's changed impressions of the coalition.
In Ultimate , Mitsunari is still loyally fighting for Wei. At Nanjun , he joins Cao Pi in attacking the Oda army for seemingly turning their backs on their alliance with Wei.
Unknown to Mitsunari and the rest of the Wei forces is that they have actually been deceived by a fake Nobunaga Oda.
He is also given a retelling of Tong Gate from the Wei perspective as they attempt to capture Da Ji before the arrival of Susano'o's army. Although startled to learn that Kiyomasa and Masanori had colluded with Da Ji, he still believes that they and the rest of the Coalition aren't being possessed or manipulated in any sort of manner.
During Warriors Orochi 4 , he and the rest of the Toyotomi army are recruited by Ares and Athena to combat the humans protecting the renegade god Perseus. Secretly, however, Mitsunari and the other members of the Toyotomi only joined to prevent Hideyoshi from becoming another hostage and are discontent and fearful of serving the gods.
Nonetheless, an Ouroboros Bracelet is passed to the Toyotomi army, and Mitsunari ends up activating it in order to protect Hideyoshi from Nobunaga's wrath at Xu Province. After this event, Hideyoshi urges Mitsunari to plan the army's next move.
Hoping to defect to the Coalition, Mitsunari launches a disastrous siege against the Coalition forces at Odawara - Wan Castle to intentionally have Yoshitsugu and Toshiie captured so they can deliver his letter to them. When the Coalition feigns a complete retreat, Mitsunari and the rest of the Toyotomi defect and Yoshitsugu and Toshiie arrive with their reserve troops. Like the rest of the Toyotomi, Mitsunari officially joins the Coalition thereafter.
Mitsunari and most of the Toyotomi later aid Cao Cao 's attack on Cao Pi's forces at Odani Castle before Cao Pi leaves his own letter to the Coalition, revealing his own intentions to rebel. As he wields the power of Hermes, Mitsunari acts as one of the keys to dispel the barriers leading to Zeus.
During the battle, they accept Seimei Abe into their ranks, after he reveals that the humans he recruited are simply spies waiting for a good time to break from Odin's army.
During one of the side stages, he and Ieyasu are struck by Kiyomori 's mind control sorcery and end up waging war against one another at Sekigahara, dragging along many other Coalition members into the fray as well. Nene, Zhang Chunhua and Lu Meng are later able to dispel the sorcery and a grateful Mitsunari works alongside Ieyasu to defeat Kiyomori. In Ultimate , he retains his role as one of the main human commanders within the Coalition and he helps the Coalition in tracing Odin's steps to find his soul.
He is tasked by Gaia to lead the search at Hanzhong alongside Zhao Yun , where they are attacked by Yoshitsune 's raid. After this, he and the other deified humans attempt to hold off Odin's massive assault at Changshan , where they are rescued by Hades 's reinforcements. Like the other bracelet holders, he joins the final battle against Odin at the Spring of Mimir, where they finally slay him.
As Odin was Yggdrasil's power source, the tree immediately begins collapsing without him, and Mitsunari and the humans are transported away by the gods and mystics. In the alternate scenario where Perseus reveals Hades's true manipulations of Odin and the Coalition, Mitsunari and Cao Pi help lead the retreat when Hades successfully kills Odin and absorbs all of Yggdrasil's powers.
Although deified, the pair are no match for the strengthened Hades, but a deified Yang Jian arrives with Zeus and the two hold off Hades to allow Mitsunari and Cao Pi to bring the other humans to escape. After the Coalition returns to the past and successfully rescues Odin, Mitsunari takes part in the final battle near the Spring of Mimir, helping take one of the altars powering Hades after his first retreat. He is friends with Kiyomasa and Masanori who are residents of the protagonist's homeland, Aurora.
Throughout the game's main story, they offer secondary advice to the player and inform them of Nobunaga's progress. Mitsunari's episode has him stationed as the Warlord of Ignis. He and his friends frequently fight with one another, but this time it separates them from one another.
To prove himself superior to them, Mitsunari decides to conquer the southern castles in Ransei with Ignis as his starting base.
Upon his victory, his friends accept their defeat and admit that they actually missed Mitsunari. Mitsunari fiercely denies feeling the same for them, although they easily see past his lie and encourage him to be more honest with his feelings. As the friends reconcile, they enjoy a beautiful sunset together at the beach.
The ending narrative warns that their fights will still continue. Mitsunari acts as the first leader for the Western Army in the first Kessen. As far as unit fortification and troops goes, Mitsunari is the Toyotomi commander who best mirrors Ieyasu's abilities on the field. Loyally serving Lady Yodo and believing that "right is on his side", he thinks his followers respects his wish to defend the Toyotomi family.
His right-hand man at all times is Sakon, who he converses with frequently within the war camp. Though it is a somewhat rare meeting, Mitsunari is also good friends with Lord Sugi and welcomes the latter with open arms.
Depending if the player wants to have him survive Sekigahara, Mitsunari's role in the game may be short. In the event he loses the campaign, Mitsunari flees with Sakon and Shimazu to rendezvous with the dormant Choso.
He tries to spur the survivors to flee through the fields of Minakuchi. Even if the player survives the pursuit with all units intact, Mitsunari, Sakon, and Otani will be declared dead henceforth. Should Mitsunari achieve victory, Ieyasu retreats from Sekigahara and reunites with his son Hidetada at Ueda. To aid their pursuit, the Western commander calls upon the aid of Masa Sanada and his son to trap the Tokugawa troops in a pincer.
Though he fails to capture Ieyasu, Mitsunari's influence with the court grows significantly to become Chief Advisor to the Court. When Ieyasu rebuilds his forces for another push at Fuji, Mitsunari has to deal with him and the precarious Josui Kuroda riding along his flank.
If he claims victory, Mitsunari pursues the decimated Tokugawa forces further east at Hakone and will eventually confront Ieyasu's all or nothing stand at Edo. Winning Edo secures lasting peace under the Toyotomi family thanks to Mitsunari's leadership.
However, if the player loses either Fuji or Edo, Mitsunari suffers a mortal wound on the field and passes his legacy onto Yukimura. The battle history for either instances will then conclude in an imaginary second confrontation at Sekigahara. Geten no Hana presents Mitsunari as Hideyoshi 's young page using his childhood name, Sakichi Ishida.
He appears as a side character only during his master's personal story route. Serious and forthright, he echoes Ranmaru 's concerns regarding Hideyoshi's derelict decorum and is prone to lecturing him.
Sakichi never questions his loyalties for Hideyoshi and proudly completes his daily chores with stern punctuality. Once he becomes aware of Hideyoshi's close relation with Hotaru , Sakichi acts as a minor liaison between them. He explains his lord's affections to Hotaru and scolds Hideyoshi to respect her. Sakichi has more screentime in Yumeakari as he appears within the Hashiba manor's story routes.
Hotaru will often see him at the manor's gate entrance to report the whereabouts of its reputed generals to her. Aside from chastising his master to do his paperwork, the page aspires to someday become like Kanbei and spends his leisure chatting with him. He gushes over a letter pouch the strategist makes and gives to him, proudly wearing it before Hotaru. The page notices her curiosity for the wisteria decoration on it and explains its importance to her.
When Kanbei is later accused of treason, the page is shocked by the news. During one of Hideyoshi's romance events, the page is entrusted with delivering a document to the main keep but accidentally drops it in one of the garden ponds. Hotaru finds him as he is trying to fetch it from the pond and catches him before he falls into it himself. The recovered document is unreadable and Sakichi is distressed that he wasted Hideyoshi's efforts with his blunder.
She wants to ease the boy's guilt by telling a white lie to Hideyoshi: her clumsy and rushed greeting is to blame for causing him to loosen his grip on it. Hideyoshi hears the lie and merrily forgives them, rewriting another draft after Hotaru excuses herself. A crestfallen Sakichi tries to sputter the truth to Hideyoshi, but his lord catches on and tells him to not waste the princess's sympathy. The page is moved by his lord's generosity and by Hotaru's kindness, happily delivering the second draft without incident.
The second draft was written in a hurry so it is littered with errors, a complaint which Sakichi is later seen nagging Hideyoshi to fix.
The boy appears in a side event with Ranmaru's younger brothers, Boumaru and Rikimaru. The Mori siblings rave about the praise and gifts they had received from Nobunaga and ask for Sakichi to share his own experiences. Sakichi flatly shows them one of Hideyoshi's many gag urns, replying that his master gave it to him with the wish to someday be better with the ladies.
The brothers sense his somberness and try to complement the urn to cheer him up. Upon closer inspection they find the words "World's Greatest Page" scribbled on it in tiny font. They respectfully return it to the unknowing Sakichi, thinking it would be best for the boy to find the message himself someday.
He is implied to be smarter than he thinks, since he effortlessly beats Hideyoshi and his two strategists in a game of Go without even realizing it in one of the Twitter side stories. In Saihai no Yukue , Mitsunari is the main protagonist. He is a hot-blooded and charming leader who is openly empathetic to his soldiers' plight. A true sophisticate at heart, Mitsunari wanders the battlefield as an encyclopedia of artistic and "useless" knowledge.
He tends to vocalize his thoughts on painfully obvious objects in his surroundings, such as grass growing in a meadow or a tree growing in a forest.
