With TiVo, you can also rewind live TV so you can rewatch a part that you missed or didn't understand. Likewise, TiVo allows you to fast forward through the show up until the point that it becomes live TV again. This means that if you are watching a recorded segment, you can skip through the commercials. TiVo also has many more features that make watching TV more enjoyable.
These features are listed below. On Demand TiVo's On Demand feature allows you to search through a comprehensive list of movies, sports, and adult entertainment and choose what you want to watch. The majority of these films require that you pay a small fee to watch but there is also a category for older movies that are completely free. On Demand is separated into different categories based on the type of film that you want to watch. For example, if you are in the mood for something that makes you laugh, you can search through a list of comedy movies.
This, of course, works for any genre that you prefer. Not only can you browse through lists, but you can also type in the name of a particular movie with your remote keypad and, if it's listed, you can watch it immediately. Movie Descriptions In addition to the On Demand feature, TiVo gives you descriptions on every movie or show that you watch.
TiVo's movie descriptions list the actors and actresses in the film, the director and crew, the year that it came out, and the plot of the film. These movie descriptions take a lot of the guess work out of watching TV as you can read the synopsis before you even watch the show, rather than simply basing your decision on titles alone. No card is required if you are using them with an off-air antenna. These units cannot use TiVo Minis; Minis require units with at least 4 tuners. However, even the dual-tuner standard definition TiVo has been relegated to single-tuner status in virtually all situations, because it requires one digital station and one analog non-scrambled channel or two analog non-scrambled channels.
The number of options and amount of hours depends on the TiVo model. Therefore, to get significant recording capacity, you must use an external drive. The Roamio and Premiere lines use standard-sized drives, so they will accept larger drives. The way the content is shared streaming vs transferring depends on the TiVos that are on your network.
However, those units cannot stream to a Series3 or Series 2 TiVo. If you have multiple TiVos and mulitiple Minis, the TiVos will have one unified playlist and that playlist can be shared with the Minis. The content will be streamed from one box to another. The fees vary depending on the model of receiver and whether the service is monthly or product lifetime service.
If you purchase a TiVo without service, then you can contact TiVo directly to purchase service. Monthly and annual plans are also available. In May, , TiVo stopped supporting all dial-in. Standalone units must now be connected to an Internet connection wired or wireless to function. TiVo Roamio and Bolt units have wifi built in. Wifi is not an option. Standalone Series 2 TiVos that are connected to a cable box generally use an infrared "blaster" cable, which sends the remote control frequencies to the cable box.
Using these cables generally results in a slight second delay when changing channels. Some cable boxes can use a direct serial cable connection, which is much faster. HD Standalone TiVos cannot use a cable box at all. Changing channels requires no additional cabling. It is fast and easy. Almost all cable boxes and satellite boxes are compatible with standard definition TiVo units.
However, some are not. For a complete listing, see the FAQ entry here. Again, no HD TiVos can use a cable box - see above. The Roamio OTA, however, works only with antenna. So you own a TiVo set and want to take advantage of its functions -- what do you do now?
TiVo owners must subscribe to a TiVo service to use their sets. Otherwise, all they have is another box cluttering up their entertainment center. TiVo sells subscriptions by the month or by the year. At one time, TiVo offered a lifetime subscription deal the lifetime of your TiVo set, not your own lifetime.
Although TiVo no longer offers the lifetime subscription, it does honor the subscriptions already purchased by customers. TiVo does not actually provide the cable or satellite signal to your set, which means you still have to subscribe to a cable or satellite company for your television signal unless you depend entirely upon antenna signals.
TiVo's service acts as a liaison between your television signal provider and you. It interprets the signals from your provider and allows you to tell your TiVo what programs you want to record.
You have to tell TiVo where your television signal comes from when you first set up your TiVo set. Older TiVo units require a phone line so that they can download the programming schedule your service uses, but newer models can either access this information through a phone line or your home network broadband connection.
Without this information, TiVo wouldn't know how to tune in to the programs you want to watch and record. TiVo offers many package deals and specials on services, so prices change often.

Many offer packages that have no purchase price for the DVR unit. Instead, customers pay more for their cable or satellite service, though most of the time these costs are lower than TiVo's fees.
Major service providers that offer DVRs include:. How can TiVo compete against companies that offer similar services at lower fees? However, if you use a C-band satellite to receive television signals, you're out of luck. TiVo doesn't support C-band satellite feeds. C-band is one of many electromagnetic frequencies used in satellite broadcast and was the format most early satellite broadcasters used.
Customers needed a large satellite dish to pick up the frequencies. TiVo says that it can " pause live television. TiVo is actually constantly recording to a live TV buffer, which it allocates to a certain portion of its hard drive. When you hit the pause button on your remote, it freeze-frames the current image, giving the appearance of a paused videotape.
When you hit play un-pause , the recorded program begins playing. TiVos can pause for up to half an hour. After half an hour, the program will un-pause and play 30 minutes behind the live broadcast. Many TiVo owners use this function to skip commercials -- they set the TiVo to pause just as their program comes on and wait 15 to 20 minutes before un-pausing the show.
When the program breaks for a commercial, the user can fast forward to the next part of the program. You can fast forward through a recorded program at three, 18 or 60 times the normal playing speed. By giving the program a minute head start, the owner knows he won't catch up to the live programming and will be able to skip over all commercial breaks. Cable companies, television stations and advertisers are understandably concerned about viewers skipping over revenue-generating advertisements.
TiVo's search engine is called the WishList. You can enter a title, an actor, a genre or even just a keyword and the search engine will bring back results.
